Health Alert: U.S. Embassy Malabo, Equatorial Guinea

Event: The Government of Equatorial Guinea officially confirmed an end to confinement throughout the national territory and announced the relaxation of some COVID-19 related restrictions beginning Monday June 15, 2020. This first phase of downscaling will include the reopening of the hotel and catering sector.  However, discotheques, function rooms and any other place of leisure will remain closed during the first phase.  Regarding air transport, all passengers coming from abroad will have to carry a certificate of negative diagnosis for the coronavirus through a PCR test, valid for a maximum of 48 hours.(FULL TEXT)

The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19.  The Department of State is currently not organizing an evacuation of American citizens from Equatorial Guinea.  The last such flight was May 8 flight.  Per the June 15 government announcement of the first phase of reopening, domestic and international flights may recommence as long as arriving passengers show a PCR test result indicating they do not have the coronavirus.  Cronos Airlines has announced its domestic service will resume June 19, and international flights are expected by late June/early July.

Members of the public are advised to consider whether non-essential medical treatment can be deferred given possibility of infection in hospitals and clinics.

The CDC recommends the use of a cloth face covering to keep people who are infected but do not have symptoms from spreading COVID-19 to others.  The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.
